What is Epilepsy?
Epilepsy is a neurological disease characterised by a tendency to have recurring seizures. Epilepsy is the 4th most common neurological disease, though it is not necessarily a life-long diagnosis.
A seizure is a brief and temporary malfunction of normal brain activity. About 1 in 20 people will have a seizure at some stage in their life, and anyone can have a seizure if the brain is exposed to a strong enough stimulus. Seizures are often compared to a computer crashing.
It is estimated there are over 37,000 people over the age of 5 living with epilepsy in Ireland.
